Election workers help with the voting process and vote counting.
Hiring applications for election workers for the 2025 General Election in October will open on Aug. 27, 2025.

Worker eligibility
You can be an election worker if you are:
- eligible to work in Canada, and
- 16 years of age or older.
You do not have to be a Canadian citizen to apply.
Availability & Shifts
Election Day workers work all day on Monday, Oct. 20 until the ballots are counted and the voting station is closed.
- Most shifts start at 9 a.m. and could go to midnight or later.
Advance Vote and Mobile Vote workers work between Oct. 6-11 and also count ballots on Oct. 20 & 21.
- Most voting shifts on Oct. 6-11 will take place between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m.
- Ballot counting shifts will take place on Oct. 20 between 4 p.m. and 1 a.m.
- Ballot counting shifts will take place on Oct. 21 between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m.
All workers must attend election training.
Job descriptions
Election workers help with voting and vote counting under the direction of the Presiding Deputy Returning Officer (PDRO) and the Assistant PDRO. Election worker duties may include:
- Voting station set up.
- Helping voters with the voting process.
- Providing information to the public.
- Taking down the voting station.
- Counting ballots.

Presiding Deputy Returning Officer (PDRO)
The Presiding Deputy Returning Officer (PDRO) is in charge of the voting station and understands the duties of all the other workers. The PDRO:
- supervises everyone,
- deals with candidates and observers,
- organizes requests for materials,
- assigns tasks, as required,
- completes legislated forms,
- returns critical items to Elections Calgary,
- maintains the secrecy of the vote, and
- makes sure everything runs smoothly.
PDRO Requirements:
- Must be 18 or older.
- Election supervisory experience required.
- Vehicle and cell phone with SMS texting capabilities required.
- Must be excellent or good with using technology (cell phone/texting, laptop, learning new applications).
- Must be able to transport election materials and lift 15-20 lbs.

Assistant Presiding Deputy Returning Officer (APDRO)
The Assistant Presiding Deputy Returning Officer (APDRO) helps the Presiding Deputy Returning Officer (PDRO) by:
- assigning breaks,
- distributing materials,
- distributing and tracking ballots,
- directing the set up and take down of the voting station, and
- checking that everything is done correctly.
If the PDRO is away, the APDRO takes over their tasks.
APDRO Requirements:
- Must be 18 or older.
- Election experience required (supervisory experience is an asset).
- Vehicle and cell phone with SMS texting capabilities required.
- Must be excellent or good with using technology (cell phone/texting, laptop, learning new applications).
- Must be able to transport election materials and lift 15-20 lbs.

Deputy Returning Officer (DRO)
The Deputy Returning Officer (DRO):
- helps voters fill out their voter statement,
- checks voter eligibility,
- looks up or adds voters to the permanent electors register,
- checks identification,
- gives out ballots, and
- counts ballots.
DRO Requirements:
- Must be 18 or older.
- Election experience preferred.
- Good communication skills are required.
- Customer service experience is an asset.
- Must be excellent or good with using technology. During Advance Vote, DROs will use a laptop to look up and update information.
- Legible printing to help complete forms.

Information Officer (IO)
The Information Officer (IO):
- greets voters,
- tells the Presiding Deputy Returning Officer (PDRO) or Assistant Presiding Deputy Returning Officer (APDRO) if a voter needs help,
- confirms voters are at the right station and brought ID,
- manages lines,
- answers questions, and
- counts ballots.
IO Requirements:
- Must be 16 or older.
- No election experience is necessary.
- Customer service and communication skills are an asset.
- IOs will use an iPad to look up information.

Ballot Box Officer (BBO)
The Ballot Box Officer (BBO):
- helps voters put their ballots in the correct box,
- keeps the ballot boxes secure,
- thanks the voters for voting, and
- counts ballots.
BBO Requirements:
- Must be 18 or older.
- No election experience is necessary.
- Customer service skills are an asset.

Counting Officer (CO)
The Counting Officer (CO):
- counts ballots on election night and/or the next day and
- helps to clean up or take down the voting station.

- Must be 16 or older.
- No election experience is necessary.

Mobile PDRO (MPDRO)
The Mobile Presiding Deputy Returning Officer (MPDRO):
- completes duties, as outlined in the PDRO description above, and,
- provides voting opportunities for residents of care facilities or shelters,
- picks up and returns materials to the election office,
- keeps the ballot boxes secure, and
- counts ballots.
MPDRO Requirements:
- Must be 18 or older.
- Election supervisory experience required.
- Vehicle and cell phone required.
- Must be excellent or good with using technology (cell phone/texting, laptop, learning new applications).
- Must be able to transport election materials and lift 15-20 lbs.
- Experience volunteering/working at care facilities or shelters is preferred.

The Mobile Deputy Returning Officer (MDRO):
- Completes duties, as outlined in the DRO description above, and,
- goes to care facilities and shelters to help residents vote.
MDRO Requirements:
- Must be 18 or older.
- Election experience is preferred but not required.
- A vehicle and cell phone are required.
- Good communication skills are required.
- Customer service experience is an asset.
- Mobile DROs must be comfortable with driving between facilities, picking up and returning materials.
- Experience volunteering/working at care facilities or shelters is preferred.

Stand-by Worker
A Stand-by Worker is ready to fill in if another election worker cancels at the last minute. They must be ready to go to the assigned location on short notice.
Stand-by Worker Requirements:
- Must be 18 or older.
- Election experience preferred.
- Good communication skills are required.
- Customer service experience is an asset.
- Advance Vote Stand-by Workers must be excellent or good with using technology. Advance Vote DROs will use a laptop to look up information, and Advance Vote IOs will use an iPad to look up information.

*If a stand-by worker is deployed, they will receive the daily rate for the position they work. Pay may be prorated if a partial day is worked.
Stand-by workers will only receive the stand-by pay amount if they are not deployed to a station.
Preparation for the Day
Election Workers cannot leave the voting station property for any reason. Please bring:
- Water/beverages - enough to last you the entire shift.
- Food/snacks - enough to last the entire shift (there may not be any kitchen facilities at your voting station).
- Clothing – dress in layers, and ensure you are comfortable.
- Footwear – wear comfortable footwear.
- Medication(s) as needed.
